Around 9 p.m. at the emergency call center of protection and rescue Zurich, the message was received that an old farmhouse burns on Zürcherstrasse. When the fire brigade’s forces arrived on site, the building was already in full fire. With the support of the fire brigades of Protection & Intervention Winterthur, Volketswil and Protection and Rescue Zurich, the Illnau-Effretikon/Lindau fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to the neighboring building and bring the fire under control.
A person who was in the building at the time of the fire outbreak noticed the fire in good time and brought himself to safety unharmed. As a precaution, the Winterthur ambulance service was called up for the fire engines in action.
In close coordination with the fire investment service of the Zurich cantonal police, the fire brigades broke off elements in danger of collapsing after the extinguishing work and thus enabled the police to have safe access to the fire object. The cantonal police carried out various surveys and first ensured traces that are required to determine the currently unknown cause of fire. The house was completely destroyed by the fire. The amount of damage cannot yet be quantified.
The cantonal police warned the population with an Alertswiss report about the dense smoke and recommended that it avoid the location, as well as to close windows and doors. The message could be revoked again around 11 p.m.
