
The annual study that the CNC, on the basis of Vertigo data, devotes to the cinema public was published on July 1. It is observed that if their number increased in 2024, the spectators went a little less frequently in theaters.
In the past year, 64.9 % of French people went to the movies at least once. In detail, the 181.5 million (m) of entries recorded in 2024 were made by 41.8 m of spectators – against 180.4 m of entries carried by 40.9 m of spectators in 2023. What establish the average annual attendance per spectator at 4.3 (against 4.4 in 2023).
The over 50 years older, 25-49 year olds in decline
Attracted by particularly attractive French films – the CNC citing Mr AZNAVOUR, A fanfare, Emilia Pérez, Twenty gods… -, it was undeniably the seniors who will have worn attendance in 2024, 50 years and over Having represented 44.3 % of the entries, ahead of 32.4 % under 25 and 23.3 % of 25-49 year olds. In fact, the seniors go to the cinema more assiduously, with an average of 5.7 admissions per spectator, and up to 6.3 admissions for those over 60.
However, it is among young people of under 25 that the cinema penetration rate remains the highest, at 80.8 %*, against 68.7 % for 25-49 year olds and 52 % for seniors. A performance that is partly explained, according to the CNC, ” by a strong offer in animated films, (Vice-versa 2, Vaiana 2, Me, ugly and nasty 4, If Fu Panda 4), in horror films (Smile 2, Terrifier 3, Immaculate) but also in French films which [ont séduit] A young audience (Dog and cat, The last Jaguar, Golo & Ritchie) ». The under 25s went on average 4.2 times to the cinema in 2024 (a stable level compared to 2023), and represent a total of 58.8 m of entries.
As for the 13.7 m of spectators from the tranche 25-49 ansthey will have made 42.3 m of the 2024 entrances (compared to 47.6 m entries in 2023). In detail, there are fewer 25-34 year olds to go to theaters (5.1 m of spectators, -7 % compared to 2023), but they went there more often (average of 3.7 admissions per spectator, against 2.5 admissions in 2023). Conversely, the number of spectators increased in 35-49 year olds, at 8.6 m (+6.2 %), but with a largely more occasional practice (2.7 entries on average, compared to 4.2 in 2023).

Marked progression of the regular
After having recorded a decline in 2023, the spectators regulars (going at least once a month to the cinema) represent 27.9 % of the public (compared to 25.9 % in 2023). But the progression of the year 2024 is essentially carried by the spectators regular (declaring to go at least once a month but less than once a week to the cinema), the number of which reaches 10.3 m (+1.2 m). At 30.2 m, the spectators occasional (declaring going less than once a month to the cinema) are still as close to their historic record of 2023 (30.3 m). They make up 72.1 % of the public and generate 29.2 % of the entries. Finally, the number of spectators diligent (declaring going to the cinema at least once a week) Records slightly, for the second consecutive year: they are 1.4 m in 2024, against 1.5 m in 2023 and 1.6 m in 2022. They represented 3.3 % of the public for 24.2 % of entries – of shares significantly similar to those of 2019 (respectively 3.8 % and 23.8 %). The fact remains that the average attendance of each assiduous has rebounded strongly since 2022 (20.3 entries per spectator), at 31.6 entries per spectator in 2024, finding – or even exceeding – its pre -crisis level (31.3 in 2019).

Pronounced drop in entries made by inhabitants of medium -sized cities
Overall, the distribution of the public by agglomeration is stable compared to 2023: 37.1 % of spectators live in rural areas and agglomerations of less than 20,000 inhabitants, 13.3 % in agglos of 20,000 to 100,000 inhabitants and 49.5 % in agglos of 100,000 or more inhabitants (including Paris). The spectators of large cities, however, concentrate an increasing share of entries, at 58.2 % (+5.1 points compared to 2023), to finally find a level similar to 2019 (57.2 %).
This progression is accompanied by a decline on the part of the spectators of Agglos of 20,000 to 100,000 inhabitantsat 10.8 % of entries in 2024 (-6.2 points); A level which is also revealed, ultimately, close to 2019 (11.2 %). The drop to 19.7 m of the entries generated by the residents of these average agglomerations (-35.9 % compared to 2023, and -17.7 % compared to 2019), is accentuated by a small number of entries per spectator (average of 3.5 entries, against 5.6 in 2023 and 4.4 in 2019).
With an average of 3.6 entries per spectator, the rate of attendance of residents of rural areas and agglomerations of less than 20,000 inhabitants Remains at a level still lower than 2019 (4.4 entries), but stable compared to 2023. In large cities, this pace is slightly increasing, at 5.1 admissions on average (against 4.7 in 2023 … and 6 in 2019).
