Do not be too in a hurry to find Shrek, since DreamWorks and Universal have a second time postponed the release date of the fifth animated film.
After the nice (especially critical) success of the Potté 2 cat 2, The saga Shrek is fully revived. DreamWorks, which struggles to create new strong franchises and therefore count on its old titles, launched the development of another spin-off. He will be devoted to the other faithful companion on all fours of Shrek, the donkey, as himself confirmed by Eddie Murphy (who lends his voice to the character in VO).
The studio also jumped at the opportunity to launch a Shrek 5co -elderly by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, two veterans of the franchise who worked on Shrek 2, 3 et 4. A teaser (quite embarrassing by the way) had been revealed last February, but that does not necessarily mean that the film is on the right track. Indeed, Universal has once again postponed the release date, which is now very distant.
We almost arrived?
Initially, Shrek 5 was to be released in July 2026, but was postponed to December of the same year. From now on The North American release date went from December 23, 2026 to June 30, 2027as reported Variety. Note, therefore, that it will be released on Wednesday in the United States, not Friday as usual.
But nothing unpublished either, the case has still presented itself recently with Jurassic World : Renaissancereleased on Wednesday in the United States and the following Friday in France. In 2004, Shrek 2 was also released on Wednesday at homeand remains to this day the most efficient component of the saga, and the whole animated catalog of DreamWorks at the box office with its 929 million dollars harvested.
The studio did not give any reason for this postponement, but we imagine that the exits ofAvengers : Doomsdays, Dune 3 et Ice Age 6 December 18 (December 16 in France) was not the most prudent niche.
The film therefore swaps the niche of Christmas holidays for that of summer, thus reconnecting with tradition since the previous four parts of the saga Shrek were released in June. More generally, if there is no absolute rule in the matter, summer is an exit window which has already proven itself for family animated films, if only in 2024 with the release in June of Vice-Versa 2, Having become last year the biggest card of an animated film in history (excluding inflation).
Universal has also got into the habit of making movies from the saga Me, ugly and nasty in summerbetween the end of June and early July, except for the first opus released in October. To avoid traffic jam, the studio has also advanced the date of the next illumination film (still unknown), initially scheduled for June, to April 16, 2027.
If the schedule does not move in the meantime, Shrek 5 should therefore face Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse From Sony, whose release is scheduled for a week earlier, on June 23, 2027, himself having been pushed by Sony on this date last July.
In terms of vocal casting, the original version will recall Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (L’âne) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona), while Zendaya joined the distribution to play Felicia, the daughter of Ogres couple.
