“Remember … last summer”: 28 years later, a modern suite as useless as it is entertaining

Those who were teenagers in 1997 must certainly be … remember. That year, one of the “slashers” (kind of horror film featuring a psychopathic killer) who were trying to bounce back on the success of “Scream” had marked the retina: “Remember … last summer”. The feature film contains how, in Southport, a small port of the east coast, four young people overthrew a stranger by accident, an American national holiday evening, and hid his body not to see their future compromised.

A year later, a mysterious masked fisherman, apparently aware of their package, set out to eliminate them one after the other with harpoon or sea hook.

Brought at the time by the freshness of the actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, as well as by the presence of Ryan Philippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar, then queen of the small screen in her title role of the series “Buffy against vampires”, the film had been carded internationally and was very successful in France – 1, 2 million entries. To the point of arousing two suites, films either of terror but very appalling.

Exactly the same story as in 1997

And now, 28 years later, this Wednesday released a feature film entitled Wednesday … “Remember … last summer”, which is among the most anticipated blockbusters of this summer season. This new production, a suite in the form of a “reboot” which takes place today, is very easy to summarize: it is exactly the same story as the 1997 film, and it always takes place in Southport.

This time, they are five young people to be tracked down by the psychopath avenger fisherman, a year after having also accidentally provoked a death. The only notable change: they will call on Julie, survivor of the 1997 killing, to help them, which allows you to see Jennifer Love Hewitt in the saga.

We are not going to run out of emphasizing the uselessness of such a project, as it is obvious in redoing the same story without the original surprise effect, we are exposed to the comparison and to lead to a less successful film, which is the case. However, some specificities of this new version make this “Remember …” Bis a unpleasant show to watch.

Envy winks

Starting with the fact that in several times, the director allows herself to sneer concept through amazing winks or by voluntarily, even daringly, the dose on the foolishness of these young wealthy suddenly jostled by a crazy killer, and on the ineptile of certain dialogues. “Fuck on July 4!” “Lames one of the heroines, making fun of the national holiday at the risk of hating the film by all the conservatives of the country.

It is missing “the” big kitschissime scene of the original film, which featured a local beauty queen Miss shrimp fishing in a tank in the shape of a scallop. And the main actress, Chase Su Wonders, excellent in the series “City on Fire”, less here, cannot compete with the sex appeal by Jennifer Love Hewitt young. But this new version compensates by well -felt concessions to modernity. In particular this passage where Chase Su Wonders gratifies us with a lesbian scene in the toilets of an airport.

And then, between two bloody harpoons of the crazy fisherman, some signs tend to reassure those who remember the summer of 1997, as the fact that Jennifer Love Hewitt still plays as bad, in tune with her current young partners, which was also the case for those of the time. A downside: you can greet the unbridled and without complex game of Madelyn CLINE – alias Danica, the other headliner of the feature film.

A more than unexpected sequence with Sarah Michelle Gellar

Forcing outrageously on the bling -bling and innocent side – to the Cretinery – of her character, the actress, noticed for her main role in the series “Outer Banks”, makes us total in her highly tinged performance of idiotic naivety. So funny that we only have eyes for her.

Finally, the nostalgic for the founding opus will be with angels: in addition to the return of the two survivors, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the film offers us on a sequence set a sequence more than unexpected with Sarah Michelle Gellar, that we will be careful not to spoil.

In the end, this “Remember …” version 2025 allows you to spend a distracting moment, a smile sly on the lips. And with a support in mind: please stop there, do not inflict us with new suites, we know what the previous ones have given …
