If they feared that this too light love story harms the reputation of their father. considered one of the most influential writers in the post-war period, they finally decided to publish it, says Oliver Pretzel, the son of Sebastian Haffner.
“My sister did not find the novel very good,” he told Süddeutsche Zeitung. “At first, I was more of the same opinion. But by rereading it and translating it into English, I suddenly realized how ingeniously it was, ”he says.

Sebastian Haffner, who had fled Berlin with his Jewish fiancée in 1938, acquired a reputation in 1940 thanks to his work entitled “Germany: Jekyll and Hyde”. In this one. he explains in particular the rise and the mechanisms of Hitlerian fascism in Germany, so much so that Winston Churchill would have asked his cabinet to read it to understand the Nazi threat. Published for the first time in Germany in 1996. under the title “1939 – Deutschland voninnen Betrachtet” (“Germany seen from the inside”, in French), he also appeared at the top of sales as he published.
