Expected on Netflix on August 15, 2025, Night Always Comes promises to raise adrenaline. Adapted from Willy Vlautin’s black novel, this night thriller stages Vanessa Kirby in the skin of a woman at the edge of the abyss, ready to save her family in one night.
In 2016, Vanessa Kirby was revealed to the world thanks to her role as Margaret in the Netflix The Crown series. In 2020, she bluffed the spectators in Pieces of A Woman from Kornél Mundruczó, a Netflix drama for which she had been rewarded for the Volpi Cup for the best actress at the Venice Mostra. She then embodied a mother in the face of the unthinkable loss of her newborn baby.
Five years later, the actress, star of the Mission saga: Impossible is back on Netflix with Night Always Comes, a tense social thriller, adapted from the eponymous novel by Willy Vlautin, and staged by Benjamin Caron (at the controls of the Thriller Sharper in 2023).
The story takes place in a dark and rainy portland. Lynette, a desperate thirties, must bring together 25,000 dollars before dawn to prevent the expulsion of her mother Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and her brother Kenny (Zack Gottsagen). Her quest leads her to a maze of deserted streets, shabby bars and dangerous appointments, where every minute counts.
Behind the tension, Benjamin Caron films an unhappy portrait of forgotten America, these precarious workers who can lose their roof despite several jobs.
Night Always Commers us in a breathless trial race, with a heroine who makes questionable decisions, but mues by survival and the desire to save her life and family.
The director says he wanted to anchor the story in a social realism: Lynette is not just a victim, it is an unpredictable force, capable of moving from fragility to pure violence. Vanessa Kirby, also a producer via her company Aluna Entertainment, got involved from writing to preserve the hardness and humanity of the novel.
Shot almost entirely at night and in chronological order, Night Always Comes plunges the spectator into the urgency of each decision of Lynette.
Alongside the British actress, the cast brings together Jennifer Jason Leigh in the role of the mother, Zack Gottsagen in that of her brother Kenny, as well as Stephan James, Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly and Eli Roth. The script is signed Sarah Conradt and remains faithful to the novel of 2021. The production was launched in March 2024 and the shooting took place in Portland in the spring of 2024.
Benjamin Caron describes his film as “a trip to the heart of a critical moment, where each error can cost life”. For her part, Vanessa Kirby explains that she wanted to tell the story of a woman whom the system dropped, while forcing the spectator to understand his choices, even the most questionable.
With Night Always Comes, Vanessa Kirby whose career has exploded with the series The Crown continues a journey marked by complex heroines. After Pieces of A Woman and Mission: Impossible, she embarks on a role of anti -heroine which borders on the film Noir. A performance very far from the universe of the fantastic 4, in which she embodies the invisible woman.
