Paris Saint-Germain helped themselves to another trophy in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, and they are now ready to begin the defence of their Ligue 1 crown this weekend.
It is hard to see anyone stopping Luis Enrique’s team in the French top flight. Nantes have the tough task of trying to get the better of the champions on matchday one – are they on a hiding to nothing?

Nantes vs PSG predictions
Paris Saint-Germain lifted their fifth trophy of 2025 on Wednesday night, beating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup following a 2-2 draw in normal time.
It is fair to say Luis Enrique’s team did not have everything their own way in the latest edition of the annual match between the Champions League and Europa League holders.
A much-changed Spurs side raced into a 2-0 lead in Udine thanks to two goals from set-pieces. PSG had plenty of the ball, but for most of the match they were frustrated by Thomas Frank’s team.
Then came a Lee Kang-in goal in the 85th minute to give PSG hope. The reigning kings of the continent piled on the pressure and Tottenham were unable to resist, as Goncalo Ramos struck in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to save his team.
From there the momentum was with PSG, and they duly went on to triumph 4-3 in the shoot-out to become the first French outfit in history to claim the Super Cup.
It has been a phenomenal year for the Parisians so far. They may have missed out on the Club World Cup gong after losing the final to Chelsea, but the Champions League has long been the holy grail for PSG and they thrashed Inter 5-0 in that tournament’s showpiece event.
It is hard to see how Luis Enrique’s charges can improve on last season’s exploits. PSG swept all before them domestically, winning the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions to go with their success on the continent.
Retaining the Champions League is the primary goal for PSG in 2025/26. Given their massive financial advantages, the club have in effect outgrown Ligue 1.
That is not a positive development for French football, but although PSG have slipped up in the title race before, it is hard to see that happening this season because of how fine a side Luis Enrique has built.
“In terms of titles, we want to be ready to go for all of them,” Luis Enrique told UEFA.com ahead of the Super Cup.
“Of course, we all believe that we can win all of them and repeat this feat again this year, which would mean going down in history in true style, and that gives us special motivation.”

PSG travel to Nantes as the 2025/26 Ligue 1 season gets under way this weekend.

One possible target for PSG is to become the first team in Ligue 1 history to go an entire season unbeaten.
Despite their undoubted brilliance last term, they did not quite manage to hold out for 34 games without defeat. With their focus on Europe, PSG lost back-to-back matches to Nice and Strasbourg in late April and early May.
As the quote above demonstrates, Luis Enrique is fiercely ambitious and he will want to see his team give an invincible campaign a good go.
Still, it will probably take PSG a few weeks to find their rhythm given their run to the Club World Cup final meant they did not have enough time for a pre-season.
Yet even if they are not at their very best on Sunday, the French champions should beat Nantes pretty comfortably.

PSG to score in both halves
PSG found the right balance between attack and defence, which is why they finally got over the line in the Champions League.
But while the Parisians were mostly solid in the knockout stage of the competition, it was their thrilling frontline that really caught the eye.
In Ligue 1, meanwhile, PSG scored 92 goals in 34 matches. They found the back of the net in both halves 16 times – so in virtually half of their games.
Nantes had the sixth-leakiest backline in the division in 2024/25, so PSG’s forwards will have plenty of joy here.

Ousmane Dembele to score any time
Ousmane Dembele is the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or after playing such a big part in PSG’s historic season last time out.
That represents quite the turnaround for a player who seemed to be running out of time to fulfil his immense potential.
Dembele scored 35 goals in all competitions last term, having never previously notched more than 14 in a season.
The France international can get off and running for 2025/26 against Nantes on matchday one.
