“It has existed for longer than James Bond,” he insists. The British spy imagined was born in 1953 in the books of Ian Fleming. but his adventures were adapted to the screen until 1964.
For Mr. Ryfle. the key to the longevity of the character holds in the fact that he has constantly evolved, while remaining faithful to his origins.
“Godzilla was serious, he was frightening, he was heroic, he was funny. But at the same time, he is a film character who is anchored in something very real,” he retraces. “It is the trauma that Japan lived. both during the Second World War and in the consequences of the war, and following Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”
Ishiro Honda. the director of the original film, was a veteran who wanted to deliver a message against war and in particular against nuclear weapons, he recalls.
Among the fans, Michelle Pena also appreciates the multiple facets of Godzilla, which was sometimes “good, bad, hero, antihero”.
“It is not done to be loved,” she sums up. “It’s a big godzilla fans celebrate its 70th thing that looks like a dinosaur, he scares. But we really find ourselves putting ourselves behind.”
