While the start of the school year took place this Monday for many Brussels residents, the list of races for supplies is not entirely completed. Among school bookstores, the crowds are at its height.
The vast majority of annual turnover is played out for a few days around the start of the school year. At the Polytechnique bookstore, 80% of turnover is achieved during this period, reports the RTBF. The director of the brand, Benoît Geulen, knows his audience well and explains that it is mainly the parents “who only received the list of books from the school at the start of the school year” who come at the moment.
Over 160 euros
Above all, all of these manuals have a cost that quickly exceeds hundred euros per child in secondary school. As RTBF recalls, the Family League had carried out a study on the costs of re -school for families. In 2021, manuals and books represented an amount of 137 euros per student for general secondary. UE Somme which increased to 161 euros in 2024.
