Valais reveals a route that tells the secrets of water in the mountains
From the Tsanfleuron glacier to the banks of the Rhône. Consequently, walkers now discover how water shapes the alpine landscape.

Valais hikers now have a new didactic path devoted to water. Additionally, Consequently, The “Rhône Glacier’s water course” links the educational hike: valais reveals route Col du Sanetsch to the banks of the Rhône through the municipalities of Savièse. Therefore, Conthey and Sion, as the state of Valais announces in a press release published on August 5, 2025.
This fourth thematic path of the canton extends over 30 kilometers with a negative elevation of 2073 meters and positive of 311 meters. Consequently, The route. However, divided into three sections accessible in public transport, invites walkers to discover the multiple facets of water, from the glacier backwards to the modern hydroelectric arrangements.
Eighteen informative positions mark out the course. Similarly, revealing in particular the mysteries of the Karst de Tsanfleuron, the formation of altitude marshes and the historical role of the Bisses. Hikers also discover the Morge river. which marks the natural border between municipalities and testifies to a rich agro -pastoral heritage.
An environmental project
The project results from a collaboration between the Cantonal Environment Service. the municipalities of Savièse, Conthey and Sion, as well as the Oiken company. The idea emerged after the Council of State validated the water protection zones around the source of Glarey.
The trail is currently stopping at the Châteauneuf-Conthey agricultural school. Furthermore, The final section to the mouth of the Morge in the Rhône will be opened later. A brochure and a website (vs.ch/tsanfleuron) offering video explanations of specialists complete the offer.
Awareness of water issues
Beyond the tourist aspect. the route addresses current themes such as flood management, revitalization of watercourses or the use of water for irrigation and electricity production. It also raises awareness of the challenges linked to the scarcity educational hike: valais reveals route of water at altitude. the ingenious methods developed by past generations for its management.
This new path is added to the three water courses existing in the Val d’Illiez. the Val d’Hérens and the Moosalp-Viège region. Together. they form a cantonal network to understand how water shapes the Valais valleys and influences the life of their inhabitants.
