Over the years, James Gray has established himself as a major figure in American author’s cinema. And this, thanks to often introspective films, like its last three releases: Armageddon Time (2022), Ad Astra (2019) and finally The Lost City of Z (2017), which Arte broadcasts this Sunday, August 24, 2025 at 9 p.m. Sunday. A feature film also available on the platform Arte.tv. This impressive fresco, as epic as it is intimate, retraces the life of the British explorer Percy Fawcett, interpreted by Charlie Hunnam. By his side, we find beautiful people like Robert Pattinson or Tom Holland, who plays his son Jack, and then just revealed internationally following his first appearance in Spider-Man in the MCU in Captain America : Civil War.
The Lost City of Z : A true story?
James Gray’s film is based on the book The lost city of Z of the American journalist David Grann who returns to the mysterious disappearance of Percy Fawcett. The latter is a respected soldier, topographer and cartographer, sent to the Amazon at the beginning of the 20th century to trace the boundaries between Brazil and Bolivia. Once there, he is passionate about native legends and is firmly convinced of the existence of an ancient lost city which he names Z, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. In 1925, Fawcett left for what he thinks is the expedition of the revelation. He is accompanied by his son Jack (Tom Holland in the film) and a friend. The three of them disappear, without leaving traces. Today, their fate remains a mystery, while no body has yet been found.
