Dark Vader’s famous Laser Burk, which was used to cut Luke Skywalker’s hand in the episode of “Star Wars” “The Empire Counter-attack”, was exhibited on Wednesday in London, before being auctioned in Los Angeles in early September.
This “Saint Grail” is likely to cost his future buyer an arm: it is estimated up to $ 3 million (2.6 million euros).
“It is simply an incredible play in the history of cinema,” Brandon Alderger, director of operations of the Propstore sales house, told AFP during a presentation of the most important lots of the sale in London.
The weapon was handled by Dark Vader during legendary combat scenes in “The Empire Counter-Attaque” (1980) and “The return of the Jedi” (1983).
David Prowse, the actor behind the black mask, and the Bob Anderson stuntman actually used two models. One, without blade, attached to the wicked belt, and the other, for the combat scenes, with a wooden blade.
This is the version used for fighting, but devoid of its wooden blade, which is on sale, after being kept for forty years by an American individual.
Other emblematic objects of auction cinema
“Someone […] came to see us and said to us, “I have that for sale.” We were amazed, “said Propstore founder Stephen Lane, comparing the importance of this piece to that of the red shoes carried by Judy Garland in” The Magician of Oz “.
Experts have authenticated the object by comparing its bumps and scratches to those visible in the films.
“Look at the big bump on the back, it probably comes from the blade of the lightsaber of [l’interprète de Luke Skywalker)] Mark Hamill, ”explains Brandon Alderger.
Despite its value, the object consists of part of an old camera flash, to which were added recovery parts, resulting in particular from a calculator.
Among the other parts offered during this auction which will be held from September 4 to 6 are the whip, the belt and the case used by Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the last crusade” (1989).
But also a “neuralyzer” used by J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) agents to erase memory in “Men in Black” (1997). The light object, whose LED display still works, could reach $ 150,000 (around 129,700 euros).
