The publishing industry is changing

Market diversity

Recently, the company NHA NAM Culture and Communication Company (NHA NAM) launched the publication “Designing Machine Learning Systems” by Huyen Chip, the author who caused a sensation more than ten years ago with her book “Take your backpack and pars”. It is undoubtedly a surprise for those who follow Huyen Chip, because his book, entirely written in English, deals with a topical subject: artificial intelligence (IA).

Before its publication in Vietnam (translated by Do Huu Thieu and Nguyen Sy Khanh), “design of automatic learning systems” was published in more than ten languages, whose Vietnamese version was reprinted only after its publication. The case of Huyen Chip shows that this is a useful suggestion for national publishers, in response to a new request from readers.

Shortly before, in parallel with the release of the Vietnamese version, the Kim Dong publishing house also published the English version of the novel Things you use to hole of the Dy Duyen author.

According to Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Link, deputy director and editor -in -chief of the publishing house Kim Dong, the translation of works by Vietnamese authors has always been a constant effort of unity in recent years. “Previously, we started with image books (popular tales and Vietnamese fairy tales), translated into English and French, and commanded by foreign publishing houses. Gradually, we have started to translate larger works or encourage national authors to write in English and Vietnamese, like books “It’s Têt!” “,” My father is a runner “or” put your phone “from Bui Phuong Tam; “Mother’s heart” by Hoai Anh; The series of books “to make friends with nature” by Thao Nguyen, “said Quynh link.

According to Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Link, in the near future, the publishing house Kim Dong will translate a certain number of works that won the Kim Dong literary prize to continue presenting them to foreign readers, as well as Vietnamese readers living abroad.

Expanding the needs of readers

The publishing house is also one of the pioneers of the translation of Vietnamese publications in English. Last May, in parallel with the publication of “Nguyen Nhat Anh – the guardian of children’s literature”, “The daughter of yesterday” (rigid coverage) and “grow with the books of Nguyen Nhat Anh”, she also launched the English version of “There are two cats sitting near the window”. This is the next work of the writer Nguyen Nhat Anh to be translated into English, after “sitting and crying on the tree”, “I wish a good day” and “I see yellow flowers on the green grass”.

In addition, many works by other Vietnamese authors have also been invested by the publishing house to be translated and published in English, such as: Beloved Oxford, Close Your Eyes to See Paris, The Golden Road, Waiting For You To Com to San Francisco, Tiny Doll and the Giant (Duong Thuy); OPEN THE WINDOW WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED (NGUYEN NGOC THUAN); Endless Field (Nguyen Ngoc Tu), Vietnamese History in Pictures (Tran Bach Dang, editor) …

It can be said that the translation and parallel publication of the aforementioned publications constitute a positive advance for the publishing sector. In addition to the expansion of readership, it is also a way to promote and gradually present these works during international book fairs, through cultural organizations and Vietnamese embassies abroad. A typical example is the book “I See Yellow Flowers in the Green Grass”, acquired by Hannacroix Creek Books to be published and distributed in the United States.

However, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Minh, Director of Planning and Copyrights of Nha Nam, said that the current demand on this market was not sufficient and that investment was therefore a question to consider: “Translating Vietnamese works in foreign languages is often more expensive than translating foreign languages into Vietnamese. Given the current difficult situation, it will be very difficult for books publishers to have the resources necessary to carry out such a reverse translation, “said Minh.

“Each translated publication will be a cultural ambassador of Vietnam in the world, thus facilitating the presentation and sale of copyright. I am convinced that the Vietnamese book market translated into foreign languages, or published in bilingual version in Vietnam, will grow thanks to the growing investment in the cultural industry, “said Ms. Vu Thi Quynh link, deputy director and chief editor of Kim Dong editions.
