The main films and documentaries in competition

A comeback from the start of the school year for international cinema, the Venice Mostra welcomes from Wednesday a myriad of stars and a solid selection of films with the sometimes very political tone.

Among the 21 films in the running for the Golden Lion, here are the most anticipated:

  • Laugh stomach you kremlinby Olivier Assayas

An adaptation of the bestseller of Giuliano Da Empoli, who narrates the ascent towards the power of Vladimir Putin, from the point of view of one of his closest advisers. Jude Law embodies the strong man of the Kremlin on the screen.

  • A House of Dynamite de Kathryn Bigelow

Documentary side

German director Werner Herzog will present his latest film, Ghost Elephantsin the footsteps of a herd of ghost elephants in the Jungles of Angola. At 82, the one who alternates between fiction films and documentaries will receive a golden lion for his entire career during the opening ceremony.

The portrait of journalist Seymour Hersh, which is the source of revelations of numerous scandals spanning the American army, is also eagerly awaited. Laura Poitras, awarded in 2022 in Venice for her documentary on the campaign of photographer Nan Goldin against the opioid industry, is behind the camera.

Sofia Coppola will present a documentary on her friend the fashion designer Marc Jacobs, while the director Mike Figgis will show behind the scenes of Megalopolis by Francis Ford Coppola, for which he invested $ 120 million in his pocket. Presented in Cannes in 2024, the film deeply divided, some seeing it as a “modern masterpie” or a “disaster”.

Finally, on the music side, a documentary will focus on the life and work of singer Marianne Faithfull, disappeared in January.
