A sad event

But it was outside the field that the player experienced a situation that made the latest Smeaines speak. At the end of July, Matthias Verreth’s son was transported to hospital due to a viral infection. Quickly, his state of health deteriorated and the player even left the preparation course to return to Belgium.

On July 27, the sad news fell: Bari announced in a statement the death of his player’s son. And in San Siro, the whole stadium will have paid tribute to Elliott Charles Verreth.

Tribute from the whole stadium

Before that, Matthias Verreth had been welcomed at Bari’s airport by his teammates and the staff last week when he returned. In training, they had deployed a banner to wish good luck to the Belgian in this particularly difficult test.
