After The buffoon of the crown, The rose and the snake was the second title highlighted by the new Actusf editions in their answers to our questions at the start of the year, with a nice edition for another nice little pavement of almost 700 pages.
However. it turns out to be very digestible because the pen, of good quality, is above all very fluid and the twists are sufficiently present to keep the reader in suspense. But if everything is well worked. coherent, nothing will surprise the fantasy -broken reader and this is the main reproach that we can do, it is missing the little thing that would differentiate this novel from others and it appears a little too classic on many points.
First, at the level of the characters. The duo rose serpent ~ elbakin.net formed by the spadassin gifted to the sword with mysterious motivations. origins and the young mage engaged in the Imperial and naive but disdained imperial brigade for his bastardy (to which we will add his commanding father who seems ready to do anything to maintain order) works, we get attached to it quite naturally, but he follows a diagram already seen and revised and respects their archetypes.
The intrigue, although pleasant to follow, also struggles to stand out with its usual lot of conspiracies and plots.
In the background. the struggle of a new school of thought to have its place in the Empire of Falesie where the order reigns in the hand of a master and the rivalry with the Ancorha Republic bring some additional geopolitical and social issues. But if everything is clear. well constructed, again, we would like to get out of the usual paths a bit.
