Everything is there. “Kolkhoze” is a peaceful rereading of a tormented story. After having long been older than his age, Emmanuel Carrère seems younger today than her 67 years. Her courtesy is not an invitation: she is a distance.

Man would have liked to live in “The Magic Mountain”, by Thomas Mann: contemplate the world, without participating in life. It will be otherwise. “Yoga” (2020) had been criticized, a story where he reported his bipolar disorders and his internment at the Sainte-Anne hospital, eclipse the rest of the literary school year. Nothing has changed in 2025. The writer and journalist returns with “Kolkhoze”, a true novel of his family over four generations, recreating a literary tsunami. The author covers more than a century of Russian and French history there. From the Bolshevik Revolution, including the collapse of the Soviet bloc, to the war in Ukraine. Will he finally get the Goncourt Prize? Michel Houellebecq and Emmanuel Carrère have long been considered the two greatest French writers of their generation. The first sank into provocations, the second consolidated his work. One had Goncourt, the other still not.

Mestent conjugate

We are after the Second World War. Louis Carrère d’Encausse (son of a couple of Bordeaux bourgeois) met, in 1948, Hélène Zourabichvili (daughter of a ruined German-Russian aristocrat and a Georgian commoner, undoubtedly executed, in 1944, for collaboration). They married in 1952. The dream of aristocratic Russia married the ideal of eternal France. They will stay together for sixty and eleven years: twenty years of better and fifty years of worse. Hélène Carrère d’Encausse will experience a dazzling social ascent: she becomes a recognized specialist in Russia and finds herself elected perpetual secretary of the French Academy in 1999. She died on August 5, 2023, in Paris, at the age of 94. She will be entitled, in the Court of Invalides, to a national tribute. For his part, Louis Carrère d’Encausse will lead an insurer career. He died on December 30, 2023. The husband will have survived his wife 147 short days. “Kolkhoze” is a tribute to an adored mother.
