If you like science fiction films, you surely know Roland Emmerich, the man behind several apocalyptic and success films like independence day or the day after. However, you probably don’t remember one of the films that traumatized the public the most by his postulate. This is 2012, the film based on a Mayan prophecy announcing the end of the world.

Let’s see together why you should review this traumatic film and what happened to real prophecy.

What the film is talking about 2012

If you already know the work of Roland Emmerich, you may not be surprised to learn that the science fiction film 2012 tells a global apocalypse threatening to destroy any human existence. In the casting, we find in particular John Cusack, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, George Segal and Amanda Peet. And as you would expect, the classic Emmerich touch includes grandiose and devastating action sequences, an important appeal to synthetic images and, of course, a group of people trying to save themselves from massive destruction. We mainly follow a failed writer who attempts to put his family in safety after an intense solar radiation caused warming the earth’s nucleus, triggering massive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis which slowly destroy the planet.

The most curious is thatEmmerich was inspired by a Mayan prophecy to develop the main intrigue of the film. However, this is only a pretext, because the important thing was to see the massive destruction of apocalyptic films that we love so much. Sometimes they don’t even make sense, as in Moonfallbut they remain entertaining. Here, with or without prophecy, the film would have worked. What he managed to do is traumatize people with the theme of the end of the world, because The film was released three years before 2012 and, at that time, all kinds of conspiracy theories circulated.

The royal prophecy of the Mayans

As we mentioned earlier, the pretext of the apocalyptic intrigue of the film was the Mayan vision of the end of the world, supposed to occur in 2012; At least, that’s what we have been believed to believe, because the prophecy was misinterpreted. According to l’one (Autonomous National University of Mexico) and various scientific studies, Mayan prophecy did not predict the end of the worldbut rather the end of a cycle and the beginning of another. The Mayans believed that on December 21, 2012 marked the end of a cycle of 5,125 years, but they never interpreted it as a catastrophic event of this magnitude. Despite this, people decided to believe in this prophecy as a sign of the end of time.

We have already experienced several events seen as the end of the world by some: the arrival of the year 2000, the prophecy of 2012 and, of course, the pandemic of 2020. But the film inspired by the Mayan prophecy is probably the one that contributed the most to conspiracy theories on an alleged disaster. And if you want to relive the trauma of the end of the world, you can watch the film by Roland Emmerich streaming on HBO Max.
