In Memoriam: Gianni Berengo Gardin (1930-2025)

We learned the death of Gianni Berengo Gardin par Peter Fetterman. He writes:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our dear friend and artist Gianni Berengo Gardin. One of the greatest Italian humanist photographers of all time, his images are eternal. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

“I am not an artist, and I do not want to be. I am only a witness of my time. »» – Gianni Berengo Gardin

I do not agree with Gianni. I think he was an artist, but he was deeply humble and never adopted this position. I am still saddened by his disappearance, because photographers like him simply no longer exist. Here is one of his most beautiful political portraits: a simple Morris Minor, who was also my first car, bought after having managed to save to buy it while I was a young man in Great Britain.

The car is parked on the border between England and Scotland on a very cold and windy Sunday. The English love nature and like to contemplate it, that it rains or that it is beautiful. This couple, which we have felt together for a long time, remains inside to warm up. They don’t need to talk a lot, but together, they share a privileged moment. It is so typically English. I remember having witnessed scenes like this by growing up there, but the emotion that Gianni arouses in us is deeply moving and universal.

“I am looking for a different story every time, because I want to selfishly live every story that I photograph. »» – Gianni Berengo Gardin
