Historic Glasgow school could be transformed

A historic Glasgow school could be turned into flats under a new planning application.

The former Springburn Primary School on Gourley Street is subject to a proposal to turn it into 18 flats.

Documents revealed: “The proposed scheme will ensure the long-term security for a category B-listed building, previously used to provide a day nursery.

“The converted building and new build element will contribute to the local area to provide additional high-quality dwellings that will meet the demand in the area of the city.”

If successful, the site will contain one- and two-bedroom homes, four of which will be newbuilds.

Applicant Spectrum Properties 2020 Ltd emphasised that the new properties will help North Glasgow meet housing demand.

Glasgow school could be transformed – here are the details (Image: Sourced) Historically, the building was used as a nursery and then a school.

It is located near Springburn Road, Springburn railway station, Cowlairs Park and the Springburn town centre.

Papers added: “Springburn Primary School, formerly Springburn Nursery School, was designed in 1873 by David Thomson and is the surviving block of two identical buildings in the city.

“It is a two-storey stone-built structure, with asymmetrical gables and possibly had an original belfry.

“The window designs are mainly segmental-headed with some hood mouldings and have retained their original glazing pattern. The stonework is stugged ashlar with polished dressings, however, with significant weather-related deterioration.

“An inspection of the building in 2023 revealed internal fire damage and considerable water ingress which has accelerated the deterioration of the building fabric.”

Glasgow City Council’s planning officials are reviewing the application and a decision is expected by Monday, October 13, 2025.

The last day for comments is Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
