F1 ‘completely rejects’ the idea of a bop as in wec

The F1 will not adopt Bop, the famous balance of performance which is debated in WEC but allows to tighten the performance between manufacturers in hypercar as in GT.

Nikolas Tombazis. For example, an engineer in charge of the Formula 1 technique and FIA single -seater director, explains why it will not happen, while the rules of 2026 could see a team take off on the others for several years.

“It is clear that it would be ridiculous to organize a race if we knew that three cars of a particular manufacturer would always be faster by three seconds in the turn. simply because of the design of their road car, and that history would stop there. There is therefore a good reason for the BOP in certain categories or certain events, such as Le Mans. This is not the case in F1.”

He explains why f1 ‘completely rejects’ idea bop it is not compatible: “In F1, there is an advantage of knowledge over the years. This advantage is maintained from year to year and. with a limit limitation, it is not easy for someone who is behind to get out of the problem.”

“For me, the analogy is as follows: you and I run a marathon together. Let’s say that you are faster than me by 20 minutes. that you beat me and that you finish the marathon 20 minutes ahead of me.”

“What is happening in F1 is that during our next marathon. you leave 20 minutes ahead of me, and you finish 40 minutes ahead the next time. It is therefore not enough to compare your performance on a marathon. I have to do some more to catch up, and it is because there is an accumulation.”

As for the budgetary ceiling. development handicaps, Tombazis f1 ‘completely rejects’ idea bop does not see them as an unjust advantage like a BOP: “There are people who have always been in sport and who have accumulated an infrastructure, knowledge, etc.”

“There are also more recent people who may not have all that. Some of these provisions. who exist a little on the side of the blower and who will also exist on the side of the engine, try to create this capacity [de rattrapage] and so on.”

“There will never be a situation where they will give an unjust advantage to someone. It is simply a question of trying to alleviate what is perhaps an accumulated advantage or even an unjust disadvantage. You have to be careful with these words. But it is clear that I would never accept such a situation as BOP.”
