Granby International Song Festival

The Granby International Song Festival is first of all a competition that has been offering a great showcase for the next generation for over 50 years. The multiple ramifications event, which takes off this Thursday, also offers free programming in the heart of the city center-in fact, just behind the Palace theater! The first weekend, from August 15 to 17, we can see artists as diversified as Mike Clay, Motel quality, Sensei H, Alex Burger, Caroline Savoie and Alex Nevsky. As for the very popular final of the competition, it will take place on August 24 at the Palace.

Sunday evening, at Square Saint-Patrick, black film at the channel closes its 9e edition with the projection of the masterpiece of the Coen brothers, Fargofor which they had won the Oscar for the best original scenario and Frances McDormand, the Oscar for the best actress. A specialist in the work of the Coen, the critic Helen Faradji will come to present this satirical thriller where a pregnant policewoman investigates a triple murder. In case of rain, the projection will be postponed to Monday August 18.

Friday hip-hop at the Gamelin gardens

11e Gamelin Gardens season is in full swing at Place Émilie-Gamelin, near Berri-Uqam station. A superb hip-hop evening promises to be Friday August 15: the pro-V DJ will launch the ball from 5 p.m. to the rhythm of hip-hop classics, which this week celebrates its 52e birthday. He will be followed at 7 p.m. from Muhoza and his troop, who won the Francvertens in May. Then, from 8:30 p.m., the duo Rainmen, made up of Quebec pioneers shipwreck and Outra La Pieuvre, will offer a mixture of their recent pieces and its successes, including the timeless No chilling. The two MC will be accompanied by musicians for the occasion and will benefit from the support of the Big Dawgs Only collective. The Gamelin gardens and activities continue until September 14.

Prévost comic book festival

(L’agent Jean), Denis Rodier (The bomb) and Jean-Paul Eid (The little astronaut) are only some of the 35 comics who will be in Prévost on August 16 and 17 for the presentation of 13e Prévost comic book festival. On the program this year: exhibition in virtual reality in the world of four Quebec comics, live drawing, creation workshops, signing sessions and drawn fights. A Bédéesque thematic virtual escape game is also offered online … with a continuation to discover on the festival site. All activities are free.

Friday and Saturday, in the Wilfrid-Pelletier room, music lovers and film buffs are invited to review on the big screen cult scenes from the 23 films in the Marvel cinematic universe, among which Iron Man, Thor, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange et Black Panther. Under the direction of Francis Choinière, the Filmharmonic Orchestra will perform extracts from the original soundtracks as well as emblematic songs, of which Back in Black d’AC/DC et Hooked on a Feeling de Blue Swede.

Haitian book day

On Saturday, Haitian authors will participate in several activities at the Na Rive de Montréal center around their new titles to highlight the 17the Edition of the Haitian Book Day. The spokesperson for the event and author of Good man! Congratulations! Dummy!Fabrice Vil, will discuss his journey as part of a round table with Henry Kenol (The despair of the angels), Gabriella Kinté Garbeau (Grann and I, in the summer of my 11th birthday) et Jimmy Suzan (Migration). The brand new essay by Edwige Danticat, Our solitudes, will also be unveiled in great first for the occasion; The author will participate in a conversation with Jan J. Dominique and Rodney Saint-Éloi (who will present her new poetry collection, Make fire). Carla Beauvais will also be present to sign her book Ayiti, story of chefs.
