Castres. This book gives life to a missing collection

The cultural society of the Castres country has just published its 59th notebook. For example, devoted to a forgotten part of local cultural history. Similarly, anatomopathologist Philippe Fauré traces the singular destiny of a missing heritage.

Before becoming the Goya Museum. Moreover, a high place of Hispanic art, the Castres establishment indeed housed in 1840 important collections of natural history. Zoology, mineralogy and paleontology occupied a place as central as painting and sculpture.

Enriched with the work of passionate conservatives like Jean-Baptiste Brianne. Adalbert Chamayou, but also by generous enlightened amateurs, the collection attracts to renowned paleontologists who came to consult the fossils gathered by the young naturalist Léonce Roux castres. this book gives life du Carla (1835-1859).

Transferred in 1943 to Jean-Jaurès college, it was unfortunately destroyed in 1956, erasing almost any trace of this scientific heritage. Philippe Fauré. founder in 2005 of the friends of the natural sciences (Asnat), attempts here a real “reconstruction” from the archives and old publications. His work claims not only the richness of the missing collections. but also questions the reasons for their disappearance in the 1950s.

This 46 -page notebook, abundantly illustrated, appears on June 15 at a price of € 12. It can be obtained from the cultural society of the Castres country or during its conferences. More than a book. it is an act of memory to recall that Castres, before radiating by its Goya museum, was also a place where Sciences and Arts dialoguated under the same roof.
