Eight years ago, a film collapsed a whole cinema universe in a single outing. Today, a reboot is announced, carried by a Marvel actress. What promised to be a monumental failure could be reborn in a new light.
The brutal collapse of a shared universe
In 2017, Universal was targeting high. The studio wanted to imitate Marvel or DC with a universe connected around its classic monsters: The mummy, The invisible man, Frankenstein, Quasimodo… In short, a modern Dark Universe. Everything was based on a single feature film: The mummy With Tom Cruise.

But the result was catastrophic. The film received harsh criticism and disappointed at the box office despite the colossal budget. Result : Universal immediately put aside all the projects that depended on this shared world. The initial schedule, predefined as a succession of interconnected films, immediately shattered. The ambition has passed out overnight, leaving no follow -up to the proposed universedespite a very publicized launch.
Rebirth of the project in a new light
Today, after eight years of silence, Universal puts the cover. A 2017 mummy reboot is being producedentrusted to Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise, Ghost Train) In collaboration with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, modern horror specialists. Unlike the old project that is too ambitious, this version seems more measured and independent of the initial Dark Universe.
Another surprise: the presence of actress May Calamawy, known for her role in Moon Knight At Marvel, suggests an indirect link with the world of superheroes, or at least a nod to the Marvel universe to attract attention. This choice seems to indicate a turn to a horror/autonomous action filmwithout logic of crossover or multidiffusion.
This new start is based on simplicity rather than on a complex canvas of nested films. After the initial failure, Universal seems to have learned the lesson: Is it really a shared universe to interest the public, or is it better to produce strong solo stories? The studio seems to look for the second option this time.
