Welcome to Zippy Ice. a massive ice storage and production facility on Graham Street where the temperature holds steady at a bone-chilling 17 degrees Fahrenheit. In the middle of a summer heat wave, this frosty oasis is as cold as zippy ice keeps charlotte cool it gets.
Zippy Ice isn’t just Charlotte’s coolest place — it’s also a major player in the ice industry. Founded in 2007 by Christine. Howard Mackie, it holds the distinction of being the first woman-owned ice company in North Carolina and only the second in the United States. Now in its 18th year. the company supplies ice to convenience stores, grocery chains, restaurants, and sports venues across the two-state area.
Each day, the facility churns out a staggering 250 tons of ice. According to co-founder Howard Mackie, the ice is formed through a process of heat transfer.
“We draw the heat out of the water until it freezes,” Mackie explains. “The system cools the water to its freezing point using refrigerants in the evaporator that absorb the heat. facilitating the freezing process.”
To handle the massive production volume, Zippy Ice has turned to cutting-edge automation. A robotic stacking system now loads thousands of bags of ice onto pallets with precision. speed — efficiently handling bags of various sizes. Human workers oversee the system, ensuring the entire process runs smoothly.
From stadiums. soccer matches to summer concerts and even major events like the PGA Championship, if you’re sipping an ice-cold drink outdoors in the Carolinas, there’s a good chance the ice in your cup came from Zippy Ice.
