After the heat, the week starts with thunderstorms and a lot of wind

After a hot weekend, the German Weather Service expects a change in the weather. Sometimes strong thunderstorms and violent gusts of wind are expected for the start of the week.

Just in time for the beginning of astronomical summer on June 21, it was sunny and hot in Germany. Whether on swimming lakes, in outdoor pools, parks or beer gardens – many people pulled outside at temperatures of sometimes well over 30 degrees at the weekend.

Many people sought cooling in the water, although fatal bathing accidents also occurred. After such an accident in an outdoor pool in Frankfurt-Rödelheim, a nine-year-old girl died.

A three -year -old boy died in a bathing accident in Rather See in the right bank of the Rhine. The child was suspected, the police said.

In Leverkusen, a man was recovered dead from a lake. The 40-year-old’s body was discovered by chance, the police said. In the Hanover region in Lower Saxony, a 94-year-old died in a bathing accident at the Lohnder Kiesteich. As a police spokesman said, the exact cause of death has not yet been determined.

German weather service announces weather change

At the start of the new week, however, it should be “turbulent in terms of weather technology”, as meteorologist Thore Hansen from the German Weather Service (DWD) announced in Offenbach.

Violent storms are possible in the southeast of Germany. A tropical night is preceded at least in the southwest and east, in which the temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees.

Unusually strong wind for June

According to the forecast in the southeast, there are sometimes strong thunderstorms in the early Monday morning. From the early afternoon on a line from Lake Constance to Erzgebirge, storm -like thunderstorms must be expected with violent heavy rain, large hailstormers and heavy gusts of wind.

In the north and east, thunderstorms can also arise from noon. “The wind is there in the main focus,” said Hansen. With the thunderstorms, severe gusts of wind of up to 100 kilometers per hour can be expected. But there is also “unusually large number of wind” away from the thunderstorms.

All over Germany, wind and stormy gusts must be expected. In higher altitudes and on the lake also with gusts of wind. “This is an unusual event at this time of year.” The temperatures, on the other hand, reached the usual 20 degrees on the North Sea and up to 30 degrees in the southeast of Bavaria.

Weather calming on Tuesday

“The weather calms down on Tuesday,” says Hansen. In the north it remains rather cloudy and it also rains in some people.

In the south, on the other hand, it is rather dry and friendly. The temperature differences are large: a maximum of 19 degrees in Schleswig-Holstein and 30 degrees in Breisgau.

Partly high Forest fire risk

If drought continues, the risk of forest fires was particularly high on Sunday, for example in Brandenburg. In Lindow in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district northwest of Berlin, a fire was not yet completely deleted on Sunday afternoon.

The fire brigade is on site with several vehicles and attempts to extinguish a fire, said a spokesman for the Northwest Regional Termination Center.

The hot weekend fell together with the calendar or astronomical beginning of summer. At the summer solstice, the sun has the highest midday height over the horizon.
